NMF Statement april 2026:

«Human competence is the key for a SAFE implementation of new technologies, environmental protection, health and security».

Statement 14 April 2026

The Nordic Engineer Officers’ Federation (NMF) welcome that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a two-year global initiative to promote the theme of World Maritime Day for 2026–2027:
‘From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence’
Strengthening maritime competence, where people on the ship, in the port, shipping companies, ship recycling workers, bunkering personnel, emergency response, port state control officers and flag state administrators are in focus.
Safety first through innovation means, new safety standards for fuel, automation and digitalization into operational practice through updated training, supervision, risk and hazard management.
Regulatory readiness for decarbonization by implementing the IMO strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a safe, consistent and in line with operational realities.
Particularly important is the implementation of human safety and competence that is required to operate toxic, fire and explosion hazardous alternative fuels, new technologies and geopolitical preparedness to avoid loss of life and health
This is an important part of the IMO work, as the IMO Secretary-General Dominguez state: “Let us move beyond the conference room and turn our collective decisions into real-world results that benefit everyone.”
NMF is of the same view, we need to implementation the policies that are already agreed upon by the IMO, we can’t wait any longer, the alternative fuels are on the market and in use, we need common regulations to ensure safety everywhere
“To make the maritime industry truly sustainable, we must ensure these high standards are felt in every port and on every deck - not selectively, not unevenly, but globally.”
